1. You, Season 1-2
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 4
Our first recommendation is You, a Netflix original series centered around an outwardly charming bookstore manager and secret serial killer who falls in love and develops an obsession with his crush. Based on the books by Caroline Kepnes, You has been praised by its acting, chilly atmosphere and deconstruction of romantic-comedy tropes, You is a great watch if you want to pass time on your flight.
2. Dead To Me
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 3
Starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, Dead To Me is a drama black comedy series that follows the story of two grief stricken women who become friends at a grief support group. Lauded for its incisive writing, the chemistry between its two main leads and the twists and turns the story takes, Dead To Me is a must watch for dramedy fans.
3. BBC’s Sherlock
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 4
Sherlock, a modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective stories, follows the exploits of the eponymous Sherlock Holmes, the excentric and calculating private detective infamous for his knack for solving London’s most brain-teasing whodunits. Though a tad darker than Doyle’s original version, BBC’s Sherlock features lots of moments of levity to contrast the shows grisly subject matter. Short, witty and fast-paced, Sherlock is an excellent and addictive watch perfect for passing time on a long flight.
4. Schitt’s Creek, Seasons 1-6
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 6
Schitt’s Creek follows the story of a formerly rich and currently destitute family who is forced to relocate to Schitt’s Creek following the demise of their video store empire. While the premise alone is enough to peak anyone’s interest, the show is elevated by the excellent cast and a story that contains equal measure of comedy and drama.
5. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Seasons 1-4
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 4
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is an odd one – no one would think a musical-romcom would make for a very enticing watch, but in this very particular case, it works. Crazy-Ex Girlfriend is centered on a brilliant lawyer who abandons her job at a top New York City law firm and rellocates to West Covina, California, to pursue her ex-boyfriend from high school summer camp. Of course, there’s more to this show than meets the eye, which is exactly why it makes for such an interesting watch. Starring internet comedian turned actress Rachel Bloom, Crazy Ex Girlfriend is a great watch for your long flight.
6. Orange is the New Black
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 7
Orange is the New Black made waves when it premiered back in 2013, and for good reason. The ensemble series follows the story of multiple inmates incarcerated at Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum-security women’s federal prison located in Upstate New York. It’s an enticing watch featuring equal measure of comedy and drama – and the individual stories of the inmates are fascinating to follow.
7. Bojack Horseman
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 6
What can we say about Bojack Horseman that hasn’t been said already? It’s the animated show about the sad horseman that has a knack for making us laugh one moment and cry our eyes out the next. Go watch Bojack – you won’t regret it.
8. Russian Doll
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 2
Starring and created by Orange is the New Black alumni Natasha Lyonne, Russian Doll follows the story of a woman who is caught in a time loop at her 36th birthday party. That time loop has her dying repeatedly and always restarting at the same moment at the party. Despite its existentially horrifying premise, Russian Doll is surprisingly funny, with the humour mostly deriving from the main character’s futile attempts to figure out what is happening to her.
9. Mindhunter
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 2
The short-lived, highly-appreciated Mindhunter was a passion project created by Joe Penhall and executive produced by none other than psychological thriller auteur David Fincher. Mindhunter follows the story of three FBI agents who launch a research project to interview imprisoned serial killers in the early days of criminal psychology. It’s a short, but intense watch featuring some of the best acting and cinematography you will ever see.
10. Ozark
Available on: Netflix
Seasons: 4
Ozark is a crime drama series following the story of a mild-mannered Chicago accountant who relocates to the Ozarkstogether with his family after a money-laundering scheme for a Mexican drug cartel goes wrong. The plan: set up a bigger money-laundering operation and make amends to the cartel. Of course, everything goes terribly wrong as soon as the family steps foot in Missouri. Starring Jason Bateman as the prodigy accountant, Laura Linney as his political fixer wife and Julia Garner as a quick-witted, street-smart and big-hearted local who gets drawn to the couple’s scheme, Ozark is an excellent watch regardless if you’re in transit or not.
11. The Lost Room
Available on: YouTube
Seasons: 1
Starring Peter Krause of Six Feet Under Fame, The Lost Room is a short-lived TV series centered around a New Mexico hotel marred by supernatural phenomena. With its labyrinthine plot and fascinating subject matter, The Lost Room has attained a cult following among fans of the new weird genre. It’s a must watch – plus, at just one season, it’s perfect for a medium-length flight.
12. The Prisoner (1967)
Available on: YouTube
Seasons: 1
You’d think a nearly 6 decade old British spy thriller show doesn’t make for an enticing watch on a flight, but it’s actually pretty great. The series follows an unnamed intelligence officer who leaves his government job and is kidnapped and imprisoned in a nearly identical recreation o his home in a coastal village. Sounds interesting?
